Manfred Breuer (born May 15, 1929 ; † January 31, 2011 in Marburg ) was a German mathematician . He is known for his work on index theory relative to Von Neumann algebras .

Breuer studied mathematics at the University of Mainz and later at the University of Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1957 under Wolfgang Krull (Jacobian differential geometry and systems of first-order partial differential equations) and qualified as a professor in 1964. From 1959 to 1961 and from 1963 to 1965 he stayed in Berkeley , where he worked with Heinz Otto Cordes . From 1966 to 1971 he was a full professor at the University of Kansas at Lawrence. From 1971 until his retirement in 1996 he was C4 professor at the University of Marburg . He was also the dean of the department there for a time.

Breuer is known for his work, which appeared in the mathematical annals in the late 1960s, in which he developed an index theory relative to von Neumann algebras . Some authors still use the term Breuer index for this today .

Matthias Lesch is one of his PhD students and Jochen Brüning is one of his Habilitation students .
