Manfred Engel

Manfred Engel (* 1. March 1953 in Bamberg ) is a German Germanist and literary scholar .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1972, he studied German and English in Erlangen and Canterbury . After the state examination in 1978 for teaching at grammar schools, the doctorate in 1984 on Rainer Maria Rilke's Duinese elegies and modern German poetry. Between the turn of the century and the avant-garde with Ulrich Fülleborn at the University of Erlangen and his habilitation in 1990 in the subjects of modern German literary history and comparative literary studies (habilitation thesis: The Roman of Goethe's Era ), he was senior assistant and private lecturer at the German seminar in Erlangen from 1990 to 1997 . In the 1993/1994 winter semester he was a professor at the Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the University of Munich . From 1995 to 1997 he was a DFG Heisenberg fellow . In 1997 he was appointed adjunct professor in Erlangen. From 1997 to 2002 he taught as a university professor at the FernUniversität Hagen . Since October 2002 he has been a university professor at Saarland University . From 2004 to 2010 he was a member of the "Executive Council" of the international Comparative Literature Association (ICLA). In April 2005 he was appointed to the Taylor Chair of the German Language and Literature at Oxford University . From 2006 to 2009 he was on leave from Saarland University to take over the Taylor Chair at Oxford University. From 2018 to 2019 he was senior professor at Saarland University.
