Manfred Hauswirth (* 1966 in St. Johann im Pongau , Austria ) is an Austrian engineer and university professor at the Technical University of Berlin in the field of Open Distributed Systems. Since October 1, 2014, he has been the managing director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems FOKUS.

Life

Manfred Hauswirth attended the federal high school in St. Johann im Pongau, Austria, from 1976 to 1984. He completed his degree in computer science with a specialization in system software at the Technical University of Vienna in 1993. He then worked as a research assistant at the chair for distributed systems at the Vienna University of Technology. In 1999 he was at Mehdi Jazayeri with the thesis "Internet-scale push System for Information Distribution - Architecture, Components, and Communication" to Dr. techn. doctorate and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the same chair until the end of 2001, before moving to the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne as Senior Researcher in 2002 , where he worked until 2006.

He was then Vice Director of the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) and Professor at the National University of Ireland , Galway , for eight years . Together with the managing director Stefan Decker, he built DERI into one of the world's largest web research institutes. DERI became part of INSIGHT, Ireland's national data analysis center, in 2013 following a merger of several research centers in Ireland.

Manfred Hauswirth has been the managing director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems FOKUS since October 1, 2014. At the same time, he took over the professorship for the Open Distributed Systems department at the Technical University of Berlin. Since April 2019 he has been director at the Weizenbaum Institute for the networked society and since October 2019 co-speaker for the field of quantum computing at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft .

Hauswirth conducts research on distributed information systems , cyber-physical systems , the Internet of Things , power data processing, linked data , semantics and artificial intelligence . Manfred Hauswirth has published a total of around 350 specialist articles (as of February 2020). He is co-author of a work on distributed software architectures and several book chapters on data management and semantics.

Manfred Hauswirth is active in scientific and political committees to shape digitization. He is u. a. Principal Investigator and Director at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society and Principal Investigator at the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) and the Helmholtz-Einstein International Berlin Research School in Data Science (HEIBRiDS). Since the beginning of 2020 he has also been Principal Investigator in the new Berlin Institute for the Foundation of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) Manfred Hauswirth is also Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC) and the ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (TOIT) Journals, member of the IEEE Computer Society Conference Activities Committee, partner in the Web Science (Trust) Network of Laboratories (WSTNet) and on the supervisory board of the EIT ICT Labs Germany (part of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT) ). From 2016 to 2018 he was spokesman for the Fraunhofer Center for Digital Networking.
