Manfred Helmecke

Manfred Helmecke (born November 30, 1942 in Genthin ) is a German writer.

Life

Manfred Helmecke was born in 1942 as the youngest of two children of a barge in Genthin near Magdeburg . He spent much of his childhood and youth traveling by inland waterway . This gave him the chance to grow up in both the GDR and the FRG before the Wall was built . After an apprenticeship as a banker, he studied finance in Berlin , where he met Monika Helmecke and married in 1970 . They have four children together.

Frustrated by everyday working life in the GDR, he gave up his position as a university lecturer and researcher in Berlin in 1978 and, like his wife, decided in 1986 to work as a freelance writer.

In the beginning he often worked with Monika Helmecke on children's radio plays and stories. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he used the new freedom to get to know the world on numerous trips. This resulted in several travel diaries, some of which both his wife and his youngest son Michael Helmecke made their own contributions. Today the writer couple live in both Genthin and Northern Norway .
