Career in football

Manfred Hirsch was a soccer player from 1969 to 1992 with the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt and its successor club Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl. He started in the children's team when he was seven. After he had gone through all other junior teams and completed a welding apprenticeship, he was accepted as a defender in the squad of the first men's team of BSG Stahl, which was playing in the second-rate GDR league at the time, for the 1981/82 season. From November 1981 to April 1983 he had to do his military service, but was able to continue playing football in the third-class district league Frankfurt (Oder) with the army sports community Vorwärts Seelow .

In the seasons from 1983/84 to 1987/88, the 1.84 m tall stag was always a member of the Eisenhüttenstadt GDR league team. Also in the 1988/89 season he played 15 point games by December. In the encounter between Stahl Hennigsdorf and BSG Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt (0-0) on December 10, 1988, Hirsch was injured so badly that he was out for the rest of the season. The 1988/89 season was positive for BSG Stahl, at the end of which it was surprisingly confirmed as a climber to the top division. The 27-year-old Manfred Hirsch was nominated for the league season 1989/90, but he continued to suffer from the consequences of his injury and was therefore only used once on matchday 25. One match day later, his team had secured relegation. In the following season 1990/91 Hirsch was only a reserve player and was only used in three league games. He was also missing in the last final of the GDR soccer cup, which his team, now playing as Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl, lost 1-0 to the last GDR soccer champion Hansa Rostock.

The GDR Oberliga played for the last time in 1990/91 in the course of German reunification and also served as a qualification for the three top divisions of the DFB game operations . FC Stahl was only able to qualify for the third-class Oberliga Nordost , but had acquired the right to start the DFB Supercup 1991 and the competition for the European Cup Winners' Cup 1991/92 due to participation in the cup finals . The now only third-rate FC Stahl lost both the Supercup semi-final against Werder Bremen with 1: 1 and the two first round matches in the European Cup against the Turkish representative Galatasaray Istanbul with 1: 2 and 0: 3. Hirsch had been called up as defender in all three games. After the amateur league season 1991/92, Hirsch ended his career as a competitive footballer.
