Manfred Merkel (soccer player)

Manfred Merkel (born September 5, 1945 ) was a soccer player in the GDR . For SC Aufbau Magdeburg he played briefly in the GDR Oberliga , the highest East German soccer class. He is a four-time junior national player.

Merkel began playing soccer in the SG Dynamo Magdeburg school team in 1954. In 1963 he came to the sports center of the GDR district Magdeburg , the SC Aufbau Magdeburg , as a junior player . On October 6, 1963, he received his first appointment to an international match with the GDR junior national team. In the 4-1 victory over the juniors of Romania in Greifswald, he played as a right winger, together with his teammate Wolfgang Seguin and the later national players Jürgen Croy and Harald Irmscher . Merkel was also used in the following three international junior matches.

On January 19, 1964, at the age of 18, Merkel stood on the pitch for the first time for the upper division team of SC Aufbau. In the point game at SC Chemie Halle (1: 2 defeat) he was used as a left winger. By the end of the 1963/64 season, Merkel played two more league games. In the following season he was only used twice on the 4th and 6th matchday in the league. At the beginning of the 1965/66 season Merkel moved to the league promoted SC Chemie Halle , but did not play a league game with the first team there. In December 1965, Merkel was expelled from the Halle club for disciplinary reasons. He was immediately called up for military service, which he had to do with the Army Sports Association Vorwärts Potsdam in the third-class district league . After that, he did not return to higher-class football.
