Manfred Mertel (born August 25, 1954 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) is a former Austrian football player and current coach and functionary.

Player career

Mertel started in his hometown Klagenfurt with the lower class ASK . Further stations in his career were the Grazer AK (1974–1979 - 1974/75 as a loan player), SK VOEST Linz (1979–1981, 1982–1983, 1984–1985), SV Austria Salzburg (1981–1982) and the then in the 1st Division promoted SV Sankt Veit (1983-1984), where he played with a loan contract from August 30, 1983 (source: “Kärntner Tageszeitung” from August 31, 1983) until the winter transition period 1984/85. He then worked again at VÖEST Linz until the end of the season, i.e. June 1985. From the summer of 1985 he played for the VSV, which had again been promoted to the 2nd division . There he was, after the leave of absence from coach Tomica Delic, on April 22, 1986 charged with looking after the team until the end of the season, but could not prevent relegation to the Carinthian League . This also ended his playing career. Mertel also played in the Carinthian state team for many years .

Coaching career

After the end of his active career with VSV at the end of the 1985/86 season, he was, albeit only for a very short time, until August 16, coach at SV Spittal / Drau , which was followed by a six-month commitment at SV Sankt Veit from January 1987 . In July 1992 Mertel got back into the coaching business and was with SV Feldkirchen until June 30, 1996 , with whom he made promotion from the Carinthian League to the Middle Regional League in 1994/95 . From 1993 to February 1999 he was also the coach of the amateur team of the federal state of Carinthia (partly overlapping with SV Feldkirchen) . From 1997 he was the coach of the AKA Carinthia football academy and won the surprising title in the last year of his employment there with the U17 team, at the end of the 2004/05 season. In the 2005/06 season he was the coach of FC Carinthia until May 31, 2006. From January 1, 2007, he was involved with FC KAC 1909 , initially in the junior division. From June 2008 to June 2009 he was a coach. Since January 2013 he has been a trainer at ASK Klagenfurt . There he won the championship title in the 2015/2016 season and thus promoted to the lower league east. In February 2019 he took over the position of section head at the FC KAC mentioned above.

Functionary activity

In 1988 and 1989 Mertel worked again in sports management at SK VOEST Linz and helped set up a sports and cultural community in Linz. From 1990 he became managing director of SK Austria Klagenfurt , where he reorganized the club in his six-month activity until June 30, 1990. On May 7, 1997 he was elected chairman of SK Austria Klagenfurt , which he held until June 30, 2000. However, contrary to various reports, he was never a member of the board of this club, which had now been renamed SK Austria Kärnten . This was a wish of the club president at the time, Mario Canori , but it was not compatible with his position as a sports councilor in Klagenfurt . Currently (from the beginning of April 2016) Mertel is chairman of the coach and course department at the Carinthian Football Association.

Others

Mertel studied law at the University of Graz. In connection with his playing at SK VOEST Linz , he worked professionally in the VÖEST group in the department management before he moved to the office of the Carinthian provincial government in 1983 , where he currently works as a leading official in the “community supervision” department. In addition, Mertel is represented for the SPÖ in the municipal council of the state capital Klagenfurt , where he has the agendas “Finance Committee as well as Economy and Tourism”. From 2009 to 2011 he was a sports councilor.

He has been married since 1984 and has two sons.
