Manfred Schmidt (cultural manager)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred Schmidt (* 1949 ) is a German event manager . He runs the Residenz , a prominent event location on Pariser Platz in Berlin . His customers and guests are mainly politicians, journalists, business and association representatives.

Life

Schmidt comes from the Lüneburg Heath . After completing secondary school, he first worked as a social worker , then as a freelance journalist at WDR . In Cologne he held parties in his private apartment. The parties were so successful that Manfred Schmidt has been organizing professional events since then. One of his first customers was Annemarie Renger , then Vice-President of the German Bundestag , who, according to press reports, celebrated her 60th birthday in 1979 with Manfred Schmidt. In 2010, according to the Süddeutscher Zeitung, he was the "undisputed number one in German event management".

North-South dialogue

Between 2007 and 2009 Manfred Schmidt organized the North-South Dialogue three times, a discussion event for the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony . Olaf Glaeseker , the then press spokesman for Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Christian Wulff ( Wulff affair ), may also have supported him , although the North-South Dialogue was a purely private-sector event. This cooperation was the subject of a public prosecutor's investigation from the end of 2012, with Glaeseker and Schmidt's house being searched in January 2013. Glaeseker used his connections to Schmidt several times to take vacations free of charge. According to an investigation by the Hanover State Office of Criminal Investigation, the profit from the events will amount to EUR 871,644. In return, Glaeseker received 18 free flights with a monetary benefit of 8,860 euros and 17 vacation trips to Schmidt's holiday residences, which corresponded to a monetary benefit of 26,572 euros. In March 2013, the public prosecutor brought a lawsuit at the regional court against Schmidt for bribery and against Glaeseker for bribery. On September 6, 2013, the Hanover Regional Court admitted the indictment and announced December 9, 2013 as the start of the trial. In March 2014, the court closed the case against a monetary requirement of 25,000 euros. Schmidt also has to pay 5,000 euros to charitable organizations.

Party for Christian Wulff

On the evening of Christian Wulff's election to the office of Federal President , Manfred Schmidt hosted a party in the Residenz on Pariser Platz. The guest list was (at least partially) discussed personally with Wulff. Although Wulff spoke of a private celebration, Schmidt took entry fees of up to 3,000 euros from individual guests.

Politician Travel

In addition to Olaf Glaeseker, other prominent politicians also spent holidays with or with Manfred Schmidt. The governing mayor of Berlin , Klaus Wowereit, visited him in 2004 for a few days on his finca near Barcelona . The chairman of the Greens, Cem Özdemir , attended a soccer game between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid with Schmidt in 2011 . The cost of the tickets (several hundred euros) was partly covered by Manfred Schmidt. Silvana Koch-Mehrin probably spent a long weekend at Schmidt's house in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France, with her partner James Candon in early 2010 . The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck , and the former Federal Minister of Health Ulla Schmidt also have close relationships with Schmidt.
