Manfred Wagner (* 31 August 1944 in Amstetten ) is an Austrian cultural and musicologist and emeritus professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna .

Life

Manfred Wagner attended the Bundesrealgymnasium Amstetten and studied musicology, art history and philosophy at the University of Vienna from 1962 to 1970 as well as orchestral and choral conducting at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna . In 1970 he graduated with the doctorate to the Dr. phil. from. From 1968 to 1972 he taught as a lecturer at St. Lawrence University / USA, from 1970 to 1972 he held teaching positions at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. From 1974 (until 2012) he was a full professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and head of the chair for cultural and intellectual history. From 1980 to 1988 he was also Vice Rector of the University of Applied Arts. Furthermore, from 1987 to 1997 he held teaching positions at the Institute for Cultural Management (IKM) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and since 1994 several teaching positions at the Institute for History at the University of Vienna. In 1988 he was visiting professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin , from 1994 to 1996 lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna, 1999 fellow at the Collegium Budapest / Institute for Advanced Study and 2009 visiting professor at the University of Leiden , Netherlands.

Musicology

Manfred Wagner's musicological approach is based on both work analyzes and interdisciplinary and cultural studies approaches. Above all, biography research, a link between life and work and the topic of early childhood socialization find their way into his investigations. Wagner published - mainly resulting from the knowledge of his work on Mozart, Bruckner, Liszt and Schubert - also on musical education and socialization in connection with talent. On this topic he writes as the conclusion of a treatise on early childhood aesthetic socialization and the connection between life and work: "The artistic socialization" can be described on the one hand as an "analogue to the socialization of man in general" and on the other hand he emphasizes its possible model for the " Educationally responsible social environment ”and for“ educational institutions ”. Further focal points in his musicological work are reception research and the social, intellectual history and (not least) political implications of musical content and forms: among other things, the parallels between social phenomena and musical aesthetics.

From the early 1980s, the visual arts became a topic of his research. Over the decades, Wagner has contributed to numerous exhibition catalogs for well-known and especially young up-and-coming artists. He is also the author of several artist monographs: Carl Unger, Alfred Roller, Florentina Pakosta and Adolf Frohner. In connection with the visual arts, his approach is also characterized by the merging of social, political - or general - aspects of the humanities and cultural history with aesthetic expressions. This can be seen in topics such as violence and art, art and power, art and regionality, art and age, death in art, the idea of ​​a total work of art and questions about time, global ethos, utopia and art. Furthermore, Wagner's research includes discussions about art in public space - from art in hospitals, art in buildings, to the cultural-historical appearance of monuments - with applied arts, design, stage design, fashion, jewelry art and analyzes of contemporary and historical phenomena in the visual arts. As in music, when looking at the visual arts, one focus is on reception, the funding culture and funding policy, which he implemented in his functions as a member of various advisory boards in addition to numerous articles and press comments.

Cultural history

Manfred Wagner dedicated a few monographs and numerous articles to the broad field of cultural history. Even if Wagner published on a variety of topics, some focal points can be identified. One of the interests for many years was the search for an Austrian constant in the individual arts and in cultural history, which gave the title in his anthology Im Brennpunkt: ein Österreich . A part of his cultural-historical work reflects the historical grid of his research on music and the visual arts. In the historical context of the fin de siècle with its consequences and paradigm shifts in the arts, the question of the extent to which artists have a specific sensitivity for impending social changes that are heralded early in their works was important to him. The time of National Socialism found its way into his research mainly under the aspect of aesthetic expressions and symbolisms.

Cultural policy and education

The results of Manfred Wagner's research activities can be viewed as a synopsis of his work in all areas - dealing with educational policy, education and creativity. As a teacher, as an advocate of a biographical approach, for whom aesthetic socialization is central to human development, as a critical observer and analyst of social, political and intellectual-historical phenomena, some of his texts can also be read as appeals to cultural and educational policy. Other work

Manfred Wagner worked for the Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt am Main for decades (1974–2000). A permanent fixture was his program Das Schallplattenkonzert , in which new records and CD recordings were presented and analyzed. In the mid to late 1970s, Wagner wrote and recorded over 50 programs in the novelties, rarities and specialties series for ORF-Studio Steiermark . 1974–1975 he also oversaw ten episodes of the Ö1 program Im Rampenlicht . Mostly for the Hessischer Rundfunk he also designed several television documentaries. The spectrum ranges from the topic of extracurricular music education (1977), the music thinker Alfred Brendel (1978), the statement of a new love for the baroque (1979) or the question Is Mozart sexy? (1981) to the most famous of its features, Beethoven à la Giulini (1979).

Wagner also worked as a guest dramaturge: in 1988 he worked again with Fidelio for a production at the Hamburg Opera , the following year, in 1989, with Idomeneo at the Graz Opera House, and in 1995 he was in charge of a production of The Magic Flute at the Linz State Theater. In 1999 he designed a scenic implementation of Franz Liszt's Via Crucis, the 14 Stations of the Cross, for the Osterklang Vienna Festival .
