Manfred Zeidler (historian)

Manfred Zeidler (* 1952 ) is a German historian .

Life

Zeidler studied Eastern European History and Slavic Studies and was particularly concerned with research on the subject of National Socialism and World War II . From 1989 to 1992 he worked on a project supported by the Cultural Foundation of German Displaced Persons about the Red Army in East Germany. In 1991, Zeidler was one of the first western historians to gain insight into the Soviet Union's military archives, which had been secret until then. In 1993 he received his doctorate with a thesis entitled Reichswehr and Red Army, 1920–1933 . Further results were later published in the book End of War in the East .

From 1994 to 1998 Zeidler worked for the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism . For the Military History Research Office he was involved in the preparation of the final volumes for the book series Das Deutsche Reich und die Second World War , to which he contributed, among other things, about the "course of the Soviet occupation of eastern Germany and [the] deeper causes of the escalating violence against defenseless and innocent civilians ”contributed.
