Literary references

Mannington serves as the template for the fictional city of Grantville in the novel series 1632 (series) developed by Eric Flint . The focus of the plot are the residents of the American small town Grantville , which is transported from rural West Virginia in 2000 to the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War in Thuringia in 1631. The series, which can be assigned to the genre of alternative world stories, uses the Mannington of the year 2000 as a model of a real city in order to avoid that individual authors "discover" surprisingly extraordinary scientific, personnel or military resources within the fictitious city area thrown into the past.

In the past, writers and fans of the series have repeatedly held annual conventions in Mannington. The third took place in the summer of 2005, the fourth from August 4-6, 2006.
