Manolo Martínez Hugué
Manuel Martínez Hugué (born April 29, 1872 in Barcelona , † November 17, 1945 in Caldes de Montbui ), who is known under the name Manolo Hugué or just Manolo , was a versatile Catalan artist of the Noucentisme (a counter-movement to Modernism ) and was influenced by the avant-garde . He worked as a sculptor , painter and designer of jewelry .
Beginnings and work in France
Pablo Picasso's friend first lived in Barcelona and Paris and then for many years in Céret , where he gathered the so-called École de Céret (School of Céret) around him. These included Georges Braque , Juan Gris , Frank Burty Haviland and Pablo Picasso. His style, halfway between Noucentisme and Cubism , became very characteristic and made him a popular sculptor in Catalonia . But he also became known abroad, in particular because he belonged to the group around Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler , a German gallery owner and art historian, with whom he had business relationships from 1912 to 1933.
Return to Catalonia
Manolo Hugué moved to Caldes de Montbui in 1928 at the age of 56. His maternal grandmother came from there. In the place he hoped the thermal water would alleviate his suffering. He lived with his wife Totote and his adopted daughter Rosa until his death in Mas Manolo , where he set up his studio. A creative phase of life began here. He made small-format sculptures from various materials (clay, plaster, stone and bronze) and the corresponding processes (modeling, carving and casting). He turned to themes typical of the country such as toreros or flamenco dancers, but also to the motifs of mother with child and the female nude.
legacy
His artistic legacy is exhibited in the Thermalia Museum in Caldes de Montbui, the archive is in Barcelona in the Biblioteca de Catalunya . The municipal high school IES Manolo Hugué in Caldes de Montbui bears his name.
