Manos Loïzos

Manos Loïzos ( Greek Μάνος Λοΐζος , also into German and English with Manos Loizos and Loisos transliterated , * 22. October 1937 in Alexandria , Egypt ; † 17th September 1982 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) was a Greek composer .

Life

Loïzos was born in Egypt as the son of Cypriot emigrants. At the age of 17 he moved to Athens to study pharmacology , but then turned to music as a completely autodidact. In 1963 he began to make his first recordings.

The staunch communist, who led an active political life, excelled with his criticism of the Greek military dictatorship (1967–1974). In addition to political songs, he also wrote numerous song texts with non-political content. He worked with a variety of other artists, such as Mikis Theodorakis , Giorgos Dalaras , Maria Farantouri , Manolis Rasoulis, Lefteris Papadopoulos, Fontas Ladis and Nâzım Hikmet .

He died in a Moscow hospital in 1982 after suffering several strokes.
