Manuel Doutel de Figueiredo Sarmento

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manuel Doutel de Figueiredo Sarmento was a Portuguese colonial administrator.

On May 2, 1751 he took up the post of governor of Timor and Solor . He succeeded Manuel Correia de Lacerda , who died that same year, towards the end of his three-year term. In the meantime, a government councilor ( Conselho Governativo ) made up of Father Jacinto da Conceição and the Topasse leader and General Captain ( Capitão-Mor ) João da Hornay had managed the colony. At that time, Sarmento was already on the way from Goa , as a letter from the Bishop of Malacca on December 10, 1750 shows.

Sarmento took over the post of governor at a time when Portuguese rule in the region was in decline. In 1749 the Portuguese and the Topasse allies suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Penfui against the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In April 1751 the Liurais (rulers) of Servião ( West Timor ) revolted against the Topasse and Portuguese and in 1756 a large part of them concluded an alliance with the VOC with the Treaty of Paravicini , which initiated the political division of the island of Timor , which still exists today .

Sarmento remained in office until 1756. Some internet sources wrongly give a term of office until 1759 and suppress Sarmento's successor Vicento Ferreira de Carvalho .
