João da Hornay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

João da Hornay († 1757 ) was a ruler of the Topasse in the 18th century. From 1749/51 until his death he held the title of Captain General of Solor and Timor .

background

João da Hornay succeeded Gaspar da Costa , who fell at the Battle of Penfui (1749), as captain general and ruler of the Topasse. This changed the supremacy within the region again between the two competing family clans.

In 1751 the governor of the Portuguese Timor colony Manuel Correia de Lacerda died . Until the arrival of his successor Manuel Doutel de Figueiredo Sarmento , a councilor ( Conselho Governativo ) from João da Hornay and Father Jacinto da Conceição took over the management of the colonial administration.

The Battle of Penfui also marked the end of the rule of the Topasse and Portuguese over west Timor . In 1751 the rulers of Servião revolted against Topasse and Portuguese and in 1756 most of them concluded an alliance with the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the Treaty of Paravicini . The power of the Topasse in Timor was now limited to the Portuguese enclaves Oe-Cusse Ambeno and Noimuti .

With the death of João da Hornays, there was another conflict between Hornays and Costas for leadership. Only with the marriage of Gaspar's son Francisco with the sister of Domingos da Costa II and the appointment of Domingo as lieutenant general could he settle the dispute. Larantuka on the island of Flores was ruled by João's sister Dona Maria . The Dutch arranged for Maria to marry an attractive Dutch official, thus bringing Larantuka into the VOC's sphere of influence.
