Manuel Garcia-Barrado

Manuel Garcia-Barrado Sr. (Born January 1, 1918 in Madrid ; † December 5, 2006 in Mauthausen ) was a volunteer in the Spanish civil war and survivor of Mauthausen concentration camp .

Life

In 1937 he defended Madrid against the Franquists for the republican parties. Then he fled to France, where he was imprisoned in the Gurs camp . He signed up for the Foreign Legion .

After Hitler-Germany's victory over France, Garcia-Barrado was imprisoned as a prisoner of war in Stalag XII-D (Trier). On April 3, 1941, he was transferred to Mauthausen concentration camp . He survived as a draftsman in the main camp and then in the Gusen satellite camp . In 1945 he was liberated in Gusen.

He stayed in the Mauthausen community, married and had two sons. In the post-war period he was a football player in ASKÖ Mauthausen. Later he took over the management of the Mauthausen Memorial. In 1983 he retired.

Soon after, he was appointed Knight of the Spanish Legion of Honor (this award-Garcia Barrados understood King Juan Carlos I himself as a tribute of the kingdom before the Spanish prisoners in the concentration camps of the Nazis). Manuel Garcia-Barrado Sr. was the bearer of the Golden Sign of Merit of the Republic of Austria and the Silver Sign of Merit of the Province of Upper Austria .
