Manuel J. Borja-Villel (* 1957 in Burriana , Castellón ) is a Spanish curator , art historian and museum director.

life and work

Manuel J. Borja-Villel studied art history at the University of Valencia until 1980 . He was a Fulbright Scholar from 1981 to 1983 and studied at Yale University . In 1987 he received his Masters in Philosophy from the City University of New York . From 1988 to 1989 he received a Kress Foundation Fellowship. In 1989 he completed his studies as a Ph.D. from.

From 1990 to 1998 Manuel J. Borja-Villel was director of the Fundació Antoni Tàpies museum . There he was responsible for exhibitions by Louise Bourgeois , Brassaï , Marcel Broodthaers , Lygia Clark , Hans Haacke and Krzysztof Wodiczko . Borja-Villel was director of the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) from 1998 to 2008 . Among the exhibitions he organized in this role were: Vito Acconci , El Lissitzky , Öyvind Fahlström , Peter Fischli and David Weiss , Robert Frank , David Goldblatt , Luís Gordillo , Raymond Hains , Richard Hamilton , William Kentridge , Perejaume , Michelangelo Pistoletto , Gerhard Richter , Martha Rosler , and Antoni Tàpies .

In 2007 Borja-Villel was a member of the documenta 12 search committee and a member of the jury for the 52nd Venice Biennale .

Manuel J. Borja-Villel has been the director of the Museo Reina Sofía since 2008.

In 2010 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
