Manuel Joaquim Pinheiro Chagas (born November 13, 1842 in Lisbon , Portugal ; † May 7, 1895 ibid) was an important Portuguese scholar, poet , playwright , novelist , publicist , journalist , translator and politician . He was one of the most important scholars and writers in Portugal in the second half of the 19th century and at the same time with his work a cultural scientist whose contribution to finding a national Portuguese identity is invaluable. He is also considered the founder of literary realism in Portugal.

Life

Pinheiro Chagas founded several magazines, was a journalist for various newspapers and also editor-in-chief , as well as a member of the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon. He was also the Naval and Colonial Minister of Portugal from 1883 to 1886. He translated Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne from French into Portuguese. As an editor, he was also an important representative of Portuguese positivism . His work has not yet been translated into German.

The scholar and writer was murdered in Lisbon on May 7, 1895.
