Manuel Mannheim Baizer (born May 20, 1914 in Philadelphia ; † July 9, 1988 ) was an American chemist who worked in the field of organic electrochemistry .

Life

Baizer studied chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania , where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees and received his doctorate ( Ph.D. ) in 1940 . From 1942 to 1944 he was a research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and then from 1944 to 1946 project manager at the General Chemical Company in New York . From 1946 to 1948 he taught at Brooklyn College . From 1947 to 1958 he worked in the research department of the New York Quinine and Chemical Works . In 1958 he moved to Monsanto in St. Louis , where he last held the position of a Distinguished Science Fellow . In 1979 he retired and became adjunct professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and in 1980 at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

Baizer was an internationally recognized authority in the field of organic electrosynthesis. He has published more than 100 scientific papers in this field (including some much-cited, e.g.) and was the owner of numerous patents.

In 1976 he received the ACS Award for Creative Invention from the American Chemical Society .

The Electrochemical Society (Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division) has presented the Manuel M. Baizer Award since 1992. One of the winners is Hans J. Schäfer (1998).
