Manuel Negrete Arias , short Manuel Negrete (born March 11, 1959 in Ciudad Altamirano , Guerrero state ) is a former Mexican professional football player who was used either offensively in midfield or in the attack. He was part of the starting line-up of the Mexican national team that played the 1986 World Cup in their own country.

The left-footed striker scored a large number of goals in his career. He is considered to be one of the technically best players who have ever played for Mexico.

Career

Club soccer

In the course of his career as an active footballer, Negrete played in his home country Mexico for the UNAM Pumas , CF Monterrey , CF Atlante , Toros Neza and a short-term professional football team in Acapulco , which was never represented in the country's top division.

With 101 goals he scored for the UNAM Pumas, he is to this day the club's most successful Mexican goalscorer. Only the two Brazilians Ricardo Ferretti and Evanivaldo Castro , better known by his nickname “Cabinho” , scored more goals for the Pumas . Negrete also played in Europe for Sporting Lisbon and Sporting Gijón .

He made his debut in the Mexican Primera División in 1979 with the UNAM Pumas. After the 1995-1996 season, he retired as a player from football.

National team

Negrete made his international debut on June 23, 1981 against Spain (1: 3), his last game in the dress of the national team on April 17, 1990 against Colombia (2: 0). In total, Negrete played 56 international matches and scored twelve goals.

The highlight of his international career was undoubtedly the 1986 World Cup, held in his own country, in which the Mexicans played all five games in full.
