Manuel Rojas (born January 8, 1896 in Buenos Aires , † March 11, 1973 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean journalist and writer.

Life

After first years in Argentina , Rojas' family moved to Chile in 1899 . After the death of the father (Manuel Rojas Córdova), however, Rojas' mother (Nadia Ahumada Kalasic) moved back to Buenos Aires, where Rojas went to school. At the age of sixteen he returned to Chile on his own, made contact with intellectual and anarchist circles and initially made his way as an unskilled worker. Many of the characters he met during those unsteady years later appeared as fictional characters in his literary work. In 1921 Rojas published his first poems. Using the pseudonym Pedro Norte, he wrote his own prose for the magazines Las Últimas Noticias and El Tiempo and published literary reviews in Noticias de Última Hora . He took part in literary competitions with his works Laguna and El Hombre de Ojos Azules . In 1929 the University of Concepción awarded him the Premio Atenea literary prize and the Universidad de Chile the Premio Marcial Martínez prize . The highlight of his literary career was in 1957 when he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Literatura de Chile . Most recently he taught Chilean and American literature at the Universidad de Chile. He died on March 11, 1973 in Santiago.

In honor of Rojas, the Premio Iberoamericano de Narrativa Manuel Rojas has been awarded since 2012 .

The central theme of Rojas' life was the misery, exclusion and forlornness of the Chilean working class. However, his work differed in the significantly greater complexity in the representation of existential and psychological entanglements compared to earlier literary trends, such as Criollismo and Mundonovismo , which went far less into the individuality of the individual.
