Manuel de Seabra

Ernesto Manuel Ferreira Bértolo de Seabra (born July 7, 1932 in Lisbon - † May 22, 2017 in Barcelona ), who called himself Manuel de Seabra as the writer, was a Portuguese writer and translator . He wrote in Portuguese , Catalan and Esperanto .

Seabra was born in Lisbon in 1932 into an impoverished aristocratic family, studied history and philosophy and trained as an actor at the Lisbon Conservatory. Because of his political engagement against the Salazar regime, he was arrested and had to leave Portugal as a result ; he lived in Sweden , France and the UK and eventually settled in Barcelona, ​​where he also died in May 2017 at the age of 84.

His works include short stories, novels and poems. As a literary translator, he has translated more than a hundred books into Catalan, Portuguese and Spanish. He wrote literary and political articles for Catalan newspapers. Together with his wife Vimala Devi , he compiled an extensive Portuguese-Catalan dictionary.

Seabra has been President of the ACEC (Associacio 'Collegial de Escritors de Catalunya) since 1999. He also acted as a corresponding member of the Instituto de Menezes Bragança in Goa .

Awards

In 2001 Seabra was awarded the Catalan Creu de Sant Jordi Prize .
