Life

María Vicenta Rosal Vásquez entered the community of the Bethlehemita Order (Spanish: Orden Bethlemita) at the age of 15 , which was founded in Guatemala by Saint Peter of Betancurt . The order had a male and a female branch. In Guatemala, they ran the Our Lady of Bethlehem Hospital , a school for the poor, a home for the homeless, a hostel for priests and an oratory . The individual communities named themselves Bethlehem after the birthplace of Jesus Christ (Spanish: Belén) . María was dressed by the last priest of the Bethlehem Brothers . After a short time she converted to the Catherine's Sisters, but soon returned, was elected prioress and tried to reform the community according to the constitutions. Failing to do this, she moved back to her hometown of Quetzaltenango and founded a Bethlehem there . In addition to an active life , the community also devoted itself to contemplation , devoting the 25th day of each month to Eucharistic adoration in atonement for the sufferings of the Heart of Jesus .

In 1855 Sr. Maria Vincenta founded two schools in Quetzaltenango. After a vision of the Heart of Jesus on Maundy Thursday of 1857, she had a picture of the Heart of Jesus painted and from then on promoted devotion to the sufferings of the Heart of Jesus . When the Catholic religious orders threatened to be expelled during the presidency of Miguel García Granados Zavala , they received an invitation from President Gabriel García Moreno to come to Ecuador, which in the end was not necessary. Because of the church persecution of President Justo Rufino Barrios Auyón , she had to leave Guatemala in 1877 and went to Costa Rica . There she founded a school in Cartago and an orphanage. When a secular government came to power, they had to flee again and went to Colombia in 1884 , where they founded homes for neglected girls. She also set up branches in the northern Ecuadorian cities of Tulcán and Otavalo . Sr. Maria Vincenta died after falling from her horse on August 24, 1886. She was buried in the Bethlehem of Pasto . Your body is not decomposed.

Maria de la Encarnación Rosal was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 4, 1997 . Her feast day in the liturgy is August 24th. She was the first Blessed Guatemala. The 150th anniversary of the apparitions of 1857 was celebrated with a procession in Pasto.

Due to her reform of the Bethlemita order, she is considered the founder of the order .
