Maragogype - [ maɾɐɣuˈʒipi ] - is a cross of the traditional Arabica coffee bean with the Liberica coffee bean . It is named after the Brazilian port city of Maragogipe. The maragogype coffee bean is also known as the elephant bean because of its striking size - it is 30 to 40% larger than the arabica bean . When roasted, the bean can have a length of about 16 to 24 millimeters and a width of about 12 to 16 millimeters.

The Maragogype coffee type results in a very mild, low-acid and therefore stomach-friendly infusion. For this reason, it is very popular with press ram jugs and filter coffee drinkers and is less often found in espresso roasts. The roast is comparatively light compared to other varieties.

Maragogype is grown primarily in Mexico and Nicaragua , with the best coming from the Chiapas region .
