The Marailguan ( Penelope marail , protonym: Phasianus Marail ) is a fowl from the family of the Hokkohühner (Cracidae).

The Latin additional species refers to the generic name Marai in the Caribbean languages .

The bird is found on the mountainous region of Guiana as well as in Venezuela and Brazil as far as the banks of the Amazon .

The distribution area includes subtropical or tropical moist rainforest , preferably near water, less often secondary forest . The species occurs in the lowlands up to 600 m in height, preferably on terra firme with dense undergrowth, abundant lianas and light treetops .

features

The bird is 63 to 68 cm tall, the male weighs between 772 and 1310 g, the female between 770 and 1450 g. The top is dark, with a greenish-olive tinge on the back, wings and the central tail feathers, while the outer tail feathers are bluish-black in color. The head, iris , beak base and neck up to the chest are grayish black with white markings, the rest of the underside is light brown also with white markings. The large dewlap is light red, the tip of the beak light gray, the legs reddish.

The call of the male is usually described as ringing to barking calls before dusk.

Way of life

The species lives mostly in trees, on the ground only with young birds. People like to take the same routes between the resting and hunting zones.

The breeding season is between October and November in French Guiana . The nest is shell-like and is placed high on a fork of a branch. The clutch consists of 2 to 3 eggs that are hatched over 29 days.

nutrition

The diet consists almost exclusively of fruits , which are usually sought in groups of up to about 6 individuals.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • P. m. jacupeba Spix , 1825 - Northern Brazil north of the Amazon, possibly also southeast of Venezuela
  • P. m. marail ( Statius Müller , 1776), nominate form , - Eastern Venezuela south to the Orinoco and the Guyanas

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
