Marburg Declaration (1992)

The Marburg Declaration from 1992 is a public statement by the Department of Human Medicine of the Philipps University of Marburg on homeopathy .

Content and background

The background to the statement was the plans of the German Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examination Questions (IMPP) at the time to include examination questions from the field of homeopathy in the so-called catalog of subjects for the subject of human medicine .

The Marburg doctors publicly protested against this project in the declaration. As a reason they cited, among other things, that the foundation of homeopathy consists of errors and deceptions, that its world of terms is "nonsense", that it has been tested and rejected by science and that it contradicts the mission of a university to use homeopathy other than " Heresy ”to teach.

Quotes from the declaration: “We do not regard homeopathy as an unconventional method that requires further scientific examination. We checked them out. Homeopathy has nothing to do with naturopathy. It is often said that homeopathy is based on a 'different way of thinking'. This may be so. The spiritual foundation of homeopathy, however, consists of errors (similarity rule, remedy picture, potentiation through dilution). Your concept is to pass these errors off as truth. Its operating principle is the deception of the patient, reinforced by the self-deception of the practitioner ”.

The text of the draft resolution was drafted by Rudolf Happle , who was then director of the Marburg University Dermatology Clinic. No employee of the dermatology clinic was entitled to vote when the decision was made. At that time, the decision was adopted by the department with 16 votes in favor, no votes against and three abstentions.

A new version of the German license to practice medicine in 2002 has since weakened the influence of the IMPP on the medical examination material. The developments feared by the Marburg Declaration did not materialize.
