Ludwig Prokop (born August 6, 1920 in St. Pölten ; † July 28, 2016 ) was an Austrian athlete, doctor and university lecturer. As a sports doctor , he became known as a doping hunter .

Live and act

Ludwig Prokop, a brother of the handball trainer Gunnar Prokop and the coroner Otto Prokop , graduated from high school in St. Pölten; He studied medicine in Wroclaw between frontline missions during World War II . He successfully completed his studies in 1944 at the University of Breslau. He was captured before the end of the war, from which he was released in September 1945. Then he did a short training with Lorenz Böhler . He began his occupation as a sports doctor in 1946 as a university assistant at the Institute for Physical Education at the University of Vienna and at the sports medical examination center of the City of Vienna .

In 1953 he completed his habilitation in physiology . From 1959 he was professor of physiology and sports medicine at the University of Vienna. When he was appointed full professor of exercise physiology in 1974, he also became head of the Institute for Sports Science . He held this position until 1990. He was also director at the Institute for Sports Medicine from 1969 to 1983. From 1979 to 1981 he was dean of the Faculty of Elementary and Integrative Science at the University of Vienna .

Already 73 years old, he was still doing his PhD as Dr. phil. (Philosophy) and three years later as Dr.rer.nat. (Natural sciences) and at the age of 81 still as Dr.rer.oec. (Social and economic sciences). The active athlete even at this age was also a multiple champion in swimming, fencing and pentathlon in his younger years.

As a scientist, he wrote over 800 publications, including 32 books and 150 experimental works. There were also lectures in numerous countries. He was also a member of the New York Academy of Sciences , and was active in the Council of Europe , WHO and UNESCO .

In sports medicine, the founder of the Austrian Society for Sports Medicine was president for a long time, as was the case for the International Society for Sports Medicine (FIMS) from 1976 to 1980, although he was a member of the FIMS Executive Committee in the early 1960s. He participated in 27 Olympic Games as a team doctor and doping expert of the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ).

Prokop was married and had three children. His hobbies were photography and self- tied knickers , with which he also became known ("The man with the knit"). Through his brother Gunnar, Ludwig Prokop was also brother-in-law of the former Austrian Interior Minister Liese Prokop .
