Marc Pickel

Marc Aurel Pickel (born December 12, 1971 in Wilhelmshaven ) is a German sailor.

Pickel completed an apprenticeship as a boat builder. He gained experience in sailing from an early age, first in the pirate , later in the big boat . In the mid-1990s, he was a core member of the Aerosail initiative , which the automobile manufacturer Daimler-Benz had launched to promote sailing. As a member of the crew of the "Astro" he won the regatta of the Kieler Woche and the Sardinia Cup in 1994 .

At the end of 1995 he switched to the Olympic star boat . With various crews at his side, he achieved top placings in a number of important regattas: Together with Carsten Witt , he finished third in the 1997 European Championship ahead of Varberg . Three years later, he and Thomas Auracher won the title ahead of Gaeta . From June 1998 to September 1998 and then again in February 1999 he was at the top of the world rankings of the International Sailing Federation .

With Auracher as bowhead, Pickel took part in the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in Sydney in 2000 and reached rank 12. Four years later, together with his new bowhead Ingo Borkowski , he missed the standard of the German Sports Association for qualifying for the Summer Games in Athens . In spring 2008, Pickel / Borkowski secured their 5th place in the World Championships off Miami to take part in the Summer Olympics in Beijing .

Pickel starts for the Kiel Yacht Club .
