Marc Botenga (born December 29, 1980 in Brussels ) is a Belgian politician of the Partij van de Arbeid / Parti du Travail de Belgique . Since the European elections in 2019 he has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left .

Life

Training and first political engagement

Marc Botenga was born in Brussels on December 29, 1980 as the son of a couple of teachers; he grew up multilingual. Botenga completed his school education in Laeken / Laken , then he studied law at the Free University of Brussels .

Marc Botenga was already politically active in earlier years, especially in the field of animal welfare. In 1998, the student movement fought for the resignation of the then interior minister, Louis Tobback , after the Nigerian asylum seeker Semira Adamu was killed in deportation. Later he took part in the mobilization of the workers against the closure of the Forges de Clabecq ironworks . In 2012 he was involved in the NGO Médecine pour le Tiers-Monde (now Viva Salud ) and worked with Congolese organizations that oppose foreign multinational companies.

Engagement in the PvdA / PTB

In the course of the European economic crisis from 2010 , especially the effects on Greece, Botenga began to become more involved at the European level. As a member of the Partij van de Arbeid / Parti du Travail de Belgique, he participates in actions to support Greece politically. As a result, his party joined the European United Left, of which Marc Botenga became political advisor in 2016.

For the 2019 European elections, the Partij van de Arbeid / Parti du Travail de Belgique nominated him to first place on the list. In the Walloon electoral body in particular, the party won significantly more votes (+9.11 percent to 14.59 percent; total Belgium +2.47 percent to 3.51 percent), so that the party had a MEP for the first time in its history with Botenga. Botenga joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . For the group he is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and a deputy member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs .
