Marc Pincherle

Marc Pincherle (born June 13, 1888 in Constantine , † June 20, 1974 in Paris ) was a French musicologist and violinist.

Live and act

Marc Pincherle was born in Algeria as the son of a professional officer. He studied at the Sorbonne with Louis Laloy (1874–1944), André Pirro , Romain Rolland and others. When he decided in 1913 to write his doctoral thesis on the life and work of Antonio Vivaldi , research into the music of the 17th and early 18th centuries was still in its infancy. As an avid collector and researcher, he made an outstanding name for himself in the period that followed. At times the Pincherle index ( P ) he wrote was a reference for marking Vivaldi's works. It was gradually replaced by the more complete Ryom directory in the 1970s .

Pincherle's thirst for research brought back numerous works that were believed to be lost, especially by Italian and French baroque composers. He was also active as a music editor, for example he published works by Leclair, de Mondonville and Boismortier.

Marc Pincherle was President of the Charles Cros Academy from 1950 to 1963, General Secretary of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence , Vice-President and President of the Société Française de Musicologie, member of the Académie Royale de Belgique and the Royal Musical Association, London .
