Marc Weller (born October 27, 1951 in Mutzig ) is a former French soccer goalkeeper .

Career

Weller was trained at AS Mutzig in his Alsatian homeland until he moved to the west French first division club SCO Angers in 1970 at the age of 18 . At Angers he was only intended as the third goalkeeper and played, apart from two cup games in the 1973/74 season, exclusively in the reserve team. With the expiry of his contract in the summer of 1974, the then 22-year-old goalkeeper left the club without having made his professional debut in the top French league and signed with SEC Bastia . There he first became a regular goalkeeper and thus made his first division debut, but was then largely ousted by Gérard Gili . Nevertheless, Weller delivered another competition with the slightly younger Gili and played a total of 29 league games himself until his competitor switched to FC Rouen in 1976. After Gili's departure, Weller was put on the side of the Yugoslav national goalkeeper Ognjen Petrović , who became the first goalkeeper in his place. Because he was injured at the beginning of the 1977/78 season, Weller took the position in the vacated goal and ran into the UEFA Cup . In January 1978 he lost this role when the Stade Rennes Pierrick Hiard , who later played an international match for France, was committed and replaced him. Hiard also guarded the goal in the two final matches in the European Cup against PSV Eindhoven , which the team had reached. After a 0-0 first leg it was 0-3 in the second leg when Weller came on in the 75th minute, but could no longer prevent the defeat, even if he did not concede another goal. Weller stayed in Bastia for another year, where he was regularly used.

When coach Cahuzac left the club in 1979 for the second division club FC Toulouse , he took Weller to the southern French metropolis. Although the player was not without controversy in Toulouse, he still often played for the team until he injured himself in preparation for the 1982/83 season. As a result, a substitute was hired with Stéphane d'Angelo , who played the entire season. In 1983, Weller also missed promotion to the first division. Then he was able to fight his way back into the team and played 23 first division games until he signed with the second division CFC Quimper in 1983 . He spent his last year of his career, which he ended in 1984 at the age of 32, as a regular goalkeeper. He then worked as an entrepreneur in Alsace.
