history

prehistory

Leeds United Coat of Arms

From 1961 to 1974 Don Revie was the manager and coach of the Leeds United AFC; these years were the most successful for the football club from the industrial city in the north of England. In 1968 the club won its first major titles, the League Cup and the Messestädte Cup , and in 1969 the team became English champions for the first time . In the 1971/72 season, Leeds was at the end of the season behind Derby County for the fifth time in the Revie era. In the semi-finals of the FA Cup 1971/72 United defeated the team from Birmingham City 3-0 on April 15, 1972 and reached the final of the cup for the third time . At the same time, the single Leeds United was released, which rose to the top ten of the British charts after winning the Cup.

admission

Leeds, Leeds, Leeds was recorded like the A-side Leeds United at Strawberry Studios in Stockport , co-owned by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman of 10cc ; the band played on both recordings of the soccer team. As with Leeds United , Les Reed played the piano on the recording. It is not known who the supporters , the United fans, were who, according to the artist, sang along on the label of the original single.

Stadium anthem

"Marching On Together" became the Leeds United anthem at Elland Road Stadium

Leeds, Leeds, Leeds became a stadium anthem for Leeds United fans under the more popular name Marching On Together . In Elland Road , the song has been played as the last song before kick-off for years, the second part of the chorus (“Marching on together…”) is also played by the fans during the games.

"Every day we will all say:
We love you Leeds, Leeds, Leeds
We are there for you everywhere,
We love you Leeds, Leeds, Leeds
Together we march forward
We are so proud
We shout it out loud
We love you Leeds, Leeds, Leeds

Original text:
Every day, we're all gonna say
We love you Leeds, Leeds, Leeds
Everywhere, we're gonna be there
We love you Leeds, Leeds, Leeds
Marching on together
We're gonna see you win
We are so proud
We shout it out loud
We love you Leeds, Leeds, Leeds

For the 1992 championship , Leeds, Leeds, Leeds was re-released as a single, in a special remix by Shaun Imrei on the 12-inch version and now as the A-side. It reached number 54 in the UK's top 75.

After Leeds United's promotion to the Football League Championship , the song was released in 2010 in a digitally remastered version with an additional mixed-in stadium atmosphere as a download on popular platforms. It was only available for a week and, thanks to a Facebook campaign , reached number ten on the official British charts and number one on the BBC Radio One indie charts that week. The club supported the action, among other things by having Richard Naylor sing the song after the home game before it was released with 38,000 fans after the match.

Ronnie Hilton's granddaughter , Georgette Hilton, announced in February 2012 that it would release a version of Marching On Together . Her grandfather had been a United fan and had released several other songs about Leeds United, including Glory Glory Leeds United .
