In 1968 the club won its first major titles, the League Cup and the Messestädte Cup , and in 1969 the team became English champions for the first time . In the 1971/72 season, Leeds was at the end of the season behind Derby County for the fifth time in the Revie era. For the tune of Leeds United , producer Les Reed covered a song that he himself wrote with Geoff Stephens. It was published as Sally Sunshine by Miki Antony and narrowly missed the UK Top 50 in 1971. In Germany it became known in a version sung by Cliff Richard in German as “If you laugh, happiness laughs, Sally Sunshine”; Richard's single reached number 39 in the German charts in November 1971. Leeds United was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport , co-owned by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman of 10cc ; the band played on both recordings of the soccer team.

The FA Cup, which has been awarded since 1911. Leeds United only won it in 1972.

In the text of Leeds United , the team of the season was singing about itself and was concerned with achieving the goal of winning the cup. The refrain is:

“And we play for Leeds United until the end,
Elland Road is the only place for us,
With heart and soul for the goal that is clearly in sight:
We are on our way to toast to each other with the silver cup.

And we play all the way for Leeds United
Elland Road is the only place for us
With heart and soul for the goal that's clearly sighted
We're out to toast each other from that silver Cup. "
