Marco Baggiolini

Marco Baggiolini (born August 1, 1936 in Bellinzona ) is a Swiss immunologist and biochemist. He is known for discovering and researching the first chemokines .

Baggiolini went to school in Bellinzona and Lugano and studied medicine at the University of Basel (graduated in 1962). He then studied biochemistry at the University of Bern , where he received his doctorate in 1966 (The metabolism of imipramim and its metabolites in the rat) and was an assistant, and was a post-doctoral student at Rockefeller University , where he worked with Christian de Duve on the mode of action and Researched the biochemistry of leukocytes . He then worked at Sandoz , where he was Vice Director for Biological Research from 1977 to 1979 and Head of Research in Inflammation and Immunology from 1979 to 1983. In addition, from 1978 he was associate professor of biochemistry at the University of Bern. From 1983 to 2001 he was Professor of Cell Biology and Head of the Theodor Kocher Institute at the University of Bern. There he and his colleagues discovered interleukin-8 as the first chemokine , and thus a whole class of new messenger substances of the immune system. In 1996 he became the founding president of the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI).

He was also co-director of the Swiss National Supercomputing Center at the ETH Zurich (Swiss National Supercomputing Center, CSCS).

In 1989 he received the Society for Leukocyte Biology Prize, the Emil von Behring Prize in 1998 , the Robert Koch Medal in 2000 and the Lavezzari Prize in 2001. He is an honorary doctor of the University of Ferrara , member of the Academia Europaea and the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences . From 1989 to 2004 he was a member of the Swiss Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation and was involved in the establishment of the first national research centers.

In 2009 he became chairman of the Fondazione del Centenario della Banca della Svizzera Italiana.
