Marcolino Gomes Candau (born May 30, 1911 in Rio de Janeiro , † January 24, 1983 ) was a Brazilian doctor. From 1953 to 1973 he was Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Life and accomplishments

Candau studied medicine in his home country and then worked in the local health system.

His career in WHO began in 1950 when he joined the General Secretariat of the WHO in Geneva. Two years later, he was elected Assistant Director of the WHO Office for the Americas in Washington, DC . Shortly thereafter, he was elected WHO Director General for a five-year term in 1953 to succeed Brock Chisholm . He was confirmed in his office in 1958, 1963 and 1968 for a further five years each. In 1968 he was elected a foreign member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.
