Marcus H. MacWillie

Marcus H. MacWillie was an American lawyer and Confederate politician .

Career

Not very much is known about the life of Marcus H. MacWillie. MacWillie studied law and began practicing law after receiving his license. When the Civil War broke out, he lived in Mesilla ( Arizona Territory ). On August 1, 1861, John Baylor (1822-1894) called the Confederate Arizona Territory and declared himself governor. MacWillie was appointed Territorial Attorney General by Baylor . In the following years Lewis Owings (1820-1875) was provisional governor. On March 11, 1862, Owings called MacWillie as a delegate to the first Confederate Congress to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Granville Henderson Oury (1825-1891). At the time, MacWillie was serving as the Second District Judge and Chief Justice of the Territory of Arizona. When he ran for re-election in 1863, he was elected to the second Confederate Congress, where he served until the end of the Confederation in 1865. What happened to MacWillie after the war ended is not known.
