Marcus SWYN (spelling Markus Swin * 1523 or 1524 in Lunden , † 11 June 1585 ibid) was under Adolf I first ducal bailiff of Norder Part Three of Dithmarschen .

Origin and work

Marcus Swyn was the son of Henning Swyn , a councilor in Lunden, and the grandson of the better known Peter Swyn . He was married to Margarete Helmke, a family from Lehe . The marriage remained childless.

One can only speculate about Swyn's education. He certainly studied law and was also interested in theological writings of the Reformation period.

He belonged to the rulers of the Dithmarsch Peasant Republic and was one of the hostages who were held by the victorious princes after the last feud . As a hostage he took part in the negotiations in which Dithmarschen was divided into three parts and given a new administrative organization.

Marcus Swyn was soon appointed governor in the northern third part of the country. In 1573 he successfully requested to leave office, which he held again a few years later because his successor had been suspended from office. He finally retired in February 1579.

estate

Parts of the significant, historically interesting estate are kept in the Dithmarscher State Museum. This includes a library that Marcus Swyn donated to St. Laurentius Church in Lunden in 1582, the interior of a lavishly decorated pesel and a portrait.

The double portrait of Swyn and his wife from 1552 shows him in courtly Spanish costume, with lace cuffs, fur-trimmed cloak and beret. His wife wears rich jewelry, a key case and cutlery holder. They present themselves like mayors and councilors of the larger cities. According to one judgment, there were no more than forty to sixty men in Dithmarschen.

Trivia

The saying " No pig can read that " is traced back to Marcus Swyn. After the end of the peasant republic in Dithmarschen, all ownership documents were to be certified by Landvogt Marcus Swyn. If the papers had become illegible, one noticed: “Not even a Swyn can read that anymore. - Dat can't read Swyn. "
