The Marder I was part of a self-propelled gun family that was used by the German Wehrmacht during World War II .
Marder I (Sd.Kfz.135)
The Marder I was an improvisation that was developed when, at the very beginning of the Barbarossa operation, it became clear that movable anti-tank weapons were urgently needed. For this purpose, the weapons office relied on captured French tank chassis, for example chassis from the Hotchkiss H 35 (f) , Hotchkiss H 39 (f) or the Lorraine tugboat. Polish chassis were also occasionally used. The armament was modified Russian loot cannons 7.62 cm Pak 36, but also the German 7.5 cm PaK 40/1 L46 . These makeshift arrangements were named Panzerjäger Marder I.
A total of 185 copies of this improvised tank destroyer were made. The vehicles were mainly used by the German occupation forces in France, but some copies were also used on the Eastern Front and in Italy from 1942 to 1944 . On the chassis of the Lorraine tractor there were still twelve units with the light 10.5 cm field howitzer 18/40 and 94 units with the heavy 15 cm field howitzer 13 .
