Mardik Martin

Mardik Martin (born September 16, 1934 in Abadan , Iran , † September 11, 2019 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American screenwriter of Armenian descent .

Live and act

Martin, born in Iran, grew up in Iraq , where his father worked as a merchant and oil official during the British colonial era. After moving to the United States, he studied at New York University (Masters 1968). He then taught screenwriting at NYU from 1968 to 1973. Martin became known as a screenwriter for Martin Scorsese , on whose film Hexenkessel (1973) he participated. In 1976 he moved to Hollywood and worked in the following years for Chartoff-Winkler Productions, for which he wrote screenplays a. a. wrote for Ken Russell's Valentino (1976). For The Last Waltz , the concert documentary about The Band , he collaborated again with Scorsese; also for Like a Wild Bull (1980). With Paul Schrader , he received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Screenplay for this film in 1981 .

Martin lived in Los Angeles in the following years; However, he had little success selling the film studios projects such as a Las Vegas story about Bette Midler or a drama about the New York paparazzi photographer Weegee . Martin was a senior lecturer at the University of Southern California Film School in his later years . In 2008 the film documentary Mardik: Baghdad to Hollywood was created ; In 2014 he realized the film drama The Cut with Fatih Akin , which deals with the genocide of the Armenians . This was his last published film production.

Martin died at the age of 84.
