Mardscha ( Pashto / Dari :مارجه) Is a town in the district of Nad Ali in the southern Afghan province of Helmand .
It is 40 km southwest of the provincial capital Laschkar Gah and is located at an altitude of 775 meters above sea level. About 80,000 people live in the Marjah region.
history
Marjah was founded in 1957. Together with Nad Ali, the site was part of the Helmand River Valley project, which was carried out by the Afghan government and a US engineering company and aimed at regenerating the Helmand region. By 1973, 2500 families had settled in 66 villages in the Marjah area.
War in Afghanistan
The place is considered a Taliban stronghold. In May 2009, Afghan and NATO troops attacked and captured Marjah. 15,000 kg of various drugs and over 40,000 kg of bomb construction materials were found, including ammonium nitrate and ammonium chloride .
In February 2010, Marjah was a target in Operation Mushtarak .
