Margarete Thiemann, called Gretel, was the only child of the painter and wood cutter Carl Thiemann and his wife Louise Miéville, who came from French-speaking Switzerland . The girl was of unstable health. She could not attend public school and received private tuition . Her artistic talent was shown early on. And so it soon became clear that Margarete Thiemann wanted to become a painter. The father insisted on academic training as a drawing teacher and art teacher for the higher education institutions. She graduated in Munich , the high school , then studied at the Technical University and at the Academy of Fine Arts. After successfully passing the two state examinations , Margarete Thiemann taught as a student councilor in Lindau , Aschaffenburg , Erding and temporarily at the vocational school in Dachau. In 1941 she had to retire from working life for health reasons:

"She returned to her parents' house and from then on shared the studio with her father, but repeated attacks of severe diabetes interrupted what little she could do. Her will to express herself artistically was fully preserved" (Thiemann-Stoedtner 1981, p 124).

Margarete Thiemann was one of those young artists who ultimately failed to develop their talents. Nevertheless, she left a remarkable oeuvre u. a. also many etchings and graphics

"She painted watercolors in front of nature quickly and with almost playful ease. On coarse-grained Whatmann paper, she conjured up beautiful flowers, often without any preliminary drawings. She also liked the figurative ... As a student of Professor Karl Knappe, her sculptural works were also very promising" (Thiemann o . J., p. 70).

The artist died on November 3, 1950 at the age of only 41.
