from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margaret of France ( French Marguerite de France * 1254 or 1255 , † July 1271 ) was a French princess from the dynasty of the Capetian and by marriage to John I Duchess of Brabant .

She came as the second youngest daughter of the French King Louis IX. and his wife Margarete von der Provence after their return from the crusade to Egypt (sixth crusade) at the turn of the year from 1254 to 1255 in France. Her older brother was the future King Philip the Bold .

Margaret was betrothed to the future Duke Henry IV of Brabant in 1257 . However, the marriage never materialized, apparently because the groom was mentally disabled. Heinrich IV abdicated in 1267 in favor of his younger brother, Duke Johann I, and entered a monastery . The promise of marriage was now transferred to the new duke, whom Margarete married in 1270. However, she died in childbed with her newborn as early as 1271. She was buried in the Abbey of Saint-Denis .
