Margit Messelhäuser is a former German canoeist .

Athletic career

Messelhäuser comes from Augsburg and started in the canoe slalom in the kayak discipline for the Augsburg kayak club and achieved her greatest successes in the mid-1980s. At the Canoe Slalom World Championships in 1985 in her hometown, she won the gold medal in the individual competition and the silver medal in the team competition with Gabi Schmid and Ulla Steinle . At the 1987 World Championships in Bourg-Saint-Maurice , France , she won the team world title with Elisabeth Michelerand Ulla Steinle. In addition, she was German champion in single kayaks in 1985 and 1991. In 1986 she also received the “Sportswoman of the Year” award from the city of Augsburg.

She was honored with the silver bay leaf for her athletic achievements.

After retirement

After retiring, Messelhäuser worked as a sports editor for the Landsberger Tagblatt , a regional edition of the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung , and at times as a commentator for the Eurosport broadcaster . Later she also took part regularly in canoeing competitions for senior citizens.
