Marguerite Victoire Zéphirine Anna De Riemaecker-Legot (born March 9, 1913 in Oudenaarde , East Flanders , † May 7, 1977 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician of the Christelijke People's Party (CVP) and the first female minister in Belgium.

Life

After studying law and obtaining a doctorate in law , she settled in Oudenaarde as a lawyer .

Marguerite De Riemaecker-Legot was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the first time in 1946 and was a member of the Chamber of Deputies as a representative of the CVP for Brussels until 1971. During this time she was secretary to the Chamber of Deputies between 1961 and 1965.

In July 1965 she was appointed Minister for Families and Housing by Prime Minister Pierre Harmel in his government, making her the first woman to hold a ministerial post in Belgium. She also held this ministerial office under Harmel's successor Paul Vanden Boeynant until 1968.

After leaving the Chamber of Deputies, she became an alderman and member of the Brussels Municipal Council in 1971 and held these posts until her death.

On October 18, 1974, she was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State and was thus also the first woman to receive this honorary title. In addition, she was honored with the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold and the Order of Merit of Cameroon .
