Eugen Blocher

Eugen Blocher (born December 28, 1882 in Münchenstein , † December 10, 1964 in Pully ; entitled to live in Schattenhalb and from 1926 in Basel ) was a Swiss lawyer and politician ( SP ).

Eugen Blocher's father, Emanuel Blocher, was a factory director. His brothers were Hermann Blocher and Eduard Blocher , Christoph Blocher's grandfather .

He studied law at the Universities of Basel and Berlin and received his doctorate in Basel in 1905. From 1907 to 1912 he was a substitute civil court clerk. From 1912 to 1929 he was president of the civil court and from 1917 to 1929 a member of the judicial commission of the canton of Basel-Stadt . From 1929 to 1952 Blocher was a federal judge and in 1949 and 1950 President of the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.

Blocher joined the Social Democratic Party in 1907. In 1914 and 1915 he was President of the SP of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. After 1918 he fought against the SP joining the Communist International . When the SP split in 1920/21, Blocher belonged to the right wing of the party. He was also involved in the abstinence movement - he was a member of the Good Templar Order and the Socialist Abstinentenbund .
