The Dormition Church ( Serbian Црква Успења Пресвете Богородице Crkva Uspenja Presvete Bogorodice ) is a Serbian Orthodox church in the center of Prekaja , a village in the Bosnian Opština Drvar in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

The church is the parish church of the parish Prekaja in the dean's office Grahovo - Drvar of the eparchy Bihać-Petrovac of the Serbian Orthodox Church and is not far from the river Unac . The church was built from 1883 to 1887. The church was consecrated in 1887 at the time of Metropolitan Georgije Nikolajević of Dabrobosnia.

History of the church

The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary was built between 1883 and 1887. Since its construction, the church has suffered major damage several times. The church suffered the greatest damage in the Second World War , when it was badly damaged and devastated by the Croatian-fascist Ustaše .

In 1995–1996, when the village of Prekaja was assigned to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Dayton Agreement , the church suffered great damage from members of the Croatian army. The parish house was also badly damaged.

At that time, all the inhabitants of Prekaja, which was populated by Serbs , and the other surrounding Serbian villages, as well as the town of Drvar, fled the Opština (municipality) Drvar to the Republika Srpska and Serbia .

All the property left behind by the Serbian residents was looted or destroyed. The Dormition Church in Prekaja experienced the same fate. The church was completely restored in 1905 and 1967.

architecture

The church has a single nave with an apse in the east and a steeple in the west. The light blue color of the onion-shaped roof on the church tower is striking. The church building has an iconostasis with icons , which is typical of Orthodox churches . However, the church is not painted with Byzantine frescoes.

Church consecration 2008

Thanks to the efforts of the authorities of the Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the necessary building materials for the reconstruction of the church were collected.

At the end of 2007, the comprehensive reconstruction of the church could begin. The reconstruction was completed in 2008. The almost historical reconstruction of the historical church building owes its success to Nikola Špirić , the chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who was born in Prekaja.

With the consent of the then Bishop Chrysostomus of Bihać-Petrovac, Špirić had called for donations. He also provided a fund for church building. The church was consecrated by the bishops of the Bihać-Petrovac eparchies Chrysostomus and Gregory of the Zahumlje and Herzegovina eparchy , with the highest clergy of the Bihać-Petrovac diocese.

The church was sponsored by Nikola Špirić. The Serbian Orthodox Church awarded him the Order of St. Sava, First Degree. Dragan Ivanić from the village of Vo Dorfenice received the Order of St. Sava Second Degree for his contribution to the restoration of the Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries in Krajina .

Milorad Dodik , Prime Minister of the Republika Srpska and Nebojša Radmanović , the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, were also present at the inauguration ceremony . Officials from the Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and over 5000 guests came to the church consecration . The entire renovation was carried out by employees of the “Zrnić Company” from Prijedor .

Church celebration ( Slava ) of the church is the assumption of Mary into heaven , which in the Eastern Churches is called the asleep of All Saints Mother of God .
