The Birth of Mary is a pilgrimage church and the parish church of Pettenhofen . It stands on the highest point in Ingolstadt , possibly at a point where there was once a Roman vedette .

history

Otto von Eichstätt consecrated several churches in his diocese between 1182 and 1196 , including a church in Pettenhofen. According to the Pontifical Gundekarianum , the consecration of the church in Pettenhofen was the 37th consecration that Otto von Eichstätt carried out; the exact date is not known. Another early evidence for the existence of a church in Pettenhofen is the confirmation of the pilgrimage by Pope Clement IV on April 20, 1350 in Avignon .

The Pettenhofen church probably burned down during the Thirty Years War . It was lengthened and redesigned by around ten meters between 1694 and 1714.

Some of the building fabric goes back to much earlier times. The ashlar stones and bricks may come partly from Roman times; the substructure of the tower was built in the Middle Ages . It has a square floor plan. Until 1731 the tower had a high, square top. Dominikus Barbieri from Eichstätt designed the octagonal attachment with the sound holes and the double onion hood, which was put on after the old spire was removed.

The baroque design of the interior was made in the 18th century. The late baroque high altar from 1778 was probably designed by Franz Breitenauer . It contains a late Gothic Madonna figure, the miraculous image of Pettenhofen, which was created around 1520 but later changed: crowns and sceptres made of partly gilded silver sheet date from the 17th or 18th century. Until the middle of the 19th century, the Madonna was decorated with brocade dresses and hung with sacrificial talers. It is flanked by two figures from the time the altar was made, standing on consoles and depicting Saint Joachim and Saint Anna.

Like the pulpit, the side altars date from the middle of the 17th century. The left side altar is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua , the right to the Holy Family .

The prince-bishop's court painter Johann Michael Franz created the ceiling paintings in the nave in 1778. They depict Mary's acceptance into heaven and Mary's greeting by St. Elisabeth.

Lecture figures

Eight support poles donated by families from Pettenhofen are lined up in the middle aisle. The donor families have the right to carry these poles themselves or to have them carried during processions . The figures on the support poles represent Saint Sebastian, Saint Florian as a Roman legionnaire, a Madonna with child, the penitent Mary Magdalene with a skull and cross, a Madonna in a halo, Saint Barbara with a chalice, the Archangel Michael and the Holy Family . Only the figure of the Archangel Michael is more recent (1981), the other statuettes were created in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Since 2000, the church has had a new popular altar, which, like the ambo, was created by Raphael Graf . In the front of the altar foot there is a capsule containing relics of St. Maria Goretti and the martyr St. Boniface. The popular altar was consecrated on May 6, 2000 by Bishop Walter Mixa .
