Johann Michael Franz (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Michael Franz (born December 11, 1715 in Dirlewang near Mindelheim , † April 5, 1793 in Eichstätt ) was a baroque painter and fresco artist .

Youth and education

His parents were the master carpenter Jakob Franz (* 1681) and Anna geb. Lueger. He enjoyed his education in the circle of the Augsburg Imperial City Art Academy Director Johann Georg Bergmüller (Bergmiller) (1688–1762); according to his own statements, he completed it in 1733.

As court painter in Eichstätt

Franz has been in Eichstätt since 1739. In 1751 he was appointed court painter to the prince-bishop; on November 22nd of the same year he married the daughter of the court printer, Maria Anna Magdalena Strauss (the son Anton also became a painter). His main creative period falls under Prince-Bishop Raymund Anton Graf von Strasoldo , for whom he particularly furnished the rococo hunting lodge Hirschberg with frescoes and oil paintings. The fresco artist Franz is regarded as a “virtuoso in the art of painting on a wet throw.” (Quote from: Eichstätts Kunst, p. 107). He was a "typical representative of the local painting schools and court art centers widespread at that time" (quote: Bosl, p. 217).
