The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is the Catholic village church of Kastl . The late Gothic building was built between 1503 and 1508 in the center of the village. Originally the church was consecrated to the martyr Kastulus , who also gave the place its name. Since the beginning of the 19th century it has also been the patron of the Feast of the Assumption .

history

The Kastulus Church was first mentioned in 1430 in a land register belonging to the Lower Bavarian Duke. Presumably it was built around 1400 after the canons of the Kastulus monastery in Moosburg offered the lords of the collegiate monastery in Altötting on January 23, 1393 a prayer fraternity . Originally the church was a branch of the Altötting forest parish. As a result of secularization , it was raised to a separate parish in 1812.

The second church, built between 1503 and 1508, underwent several structural changes. The tower of the church burned down in 1766 as a result of a lightning strike. During the restoration, the upper floor of the tower was renewed in baroque style. In 1768 the southern facade of the church was redesigned, next to the choir the church received an annex which was used as a sacristy .

In the interior, a new stone high altar flanked with marble columns was erected in 1780. The altarpiece - a work by the Salzburg painter Franz Nikolaus Streicher - depicts the bodily acceptance of Mary into heaven. In 1896, a transept was drawn in according to plans by the Munich architect Johann Baptist Schott .
