Holy Castulus
The holy Kastulus , also Castulus , Kastulis , Catulus , Bavarian Kastl , lived in Rome in the 3rd century .
Life and legend
Kastulus is said to have been chamberlain to the Roman emperor Diocletian (* between 236 and 245; † around 312). The legend after he was because of his faith in the eponymous catacombs on the Via Labicana in Rome buried alive .
Relics
In the second half of the 8th century, probably between 764 and 772, the monks Albin and Rhenobot brought the bones of St. Castulus from Rome to Moosburg an der Isar to the Benedictine monastery there . This monastery was responsible for the missionary work of the Holzland and Hallertau . The area of the County of Moosburg included approximately the northern part of today's Freising district . With that, St. Kastulus as the patron saint of Hallertau and the city saint of Moosburg. The relics of this Roman martyr of the 3rd century have had a lasting impact on the history and importance of the city and monastery of Moosburg.
For centuries, the year 827 was mistakenly considered the date of the translatio (“transfer”) of the relics: In 1927, the festival “1,100 years of Kastulus” was celebrated in Moosburg, for which around 20,000 believers came together.
Since the transfer, the Kastulusmünster in Moosburg has been consecrated in a double patronage next to St. Mary and St. Castulus.
After laying the Collegiate Moosburg into collegiate St. Martin to Landshut in 1598 and most of rest of the relics of the saint since 1604 in Landshut basilica St. Martin and Kastulus .
Another relic of the saint, which Walperich von Fahlenbach , perhaps a henchman of the Counts of Moosburg, brought back from a cruise around 1037 , is in the church of St. Kastulus in the hamlet of Sankt Kastl in the Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm district .
Martyrdom, reception
The Martyrdom of St. Kastulus is depicted on four wooden reliefs of the high altar made by Hans Leinberger between 1511 and 1541 in the choir of the Kastulus minster in Moosburg an der Isar .
The place and church of Kastl are also dedicated to the martyr, as is the church Svatý Haštal , Prague, the Martinskirche (Landshut) , St. Kastulus (Moosburg an der Isar) , St. Castulus (Puchschlag) , St. Kastulus (Schallenkam) , St. Kastulus (Unterschönbach) , St. Kastulus (Vilsheim) and the pilgrimage site of Sankt Kastl .
His widow Irene of Rome took care of St. Sebastian healthy.
Remembrance day, patronage, attribute
Name day of St. Kastulus is March 26th . He has been venerated as the patron saint of farmers and shepherds since late antiquity . He is called to protect against lightning , water shortages , animal diseases and horse thieves.
In addition to the martyr's palm , his attribute is the spade , since he was buried alive.
